Victoria Park – Truro Nova Scotia
This 1,000-acre natural park has hiking trails,
outdoor pool, playground, tennis courts, picnic area, washrooms and baseball
field. A winding stream flows through a deep gorge, where there are two
picturesque waterfalls:

The Truro Nova Scotia Tree Statues
The Truro Tree Committee has endeavored to make the
most of an unfortunate situation, the loss of many of the Town's stately elm
trees to Dutch Elm Disease. On behalf of Truro Town Council, the Tree Committee
manages the Truro urban forest. They coordinate the planting of trees, the
cutting of trees causing a safety hazard as well as the removal of diseased elm
trees. As one of the few communities in the Maritimes to do so, the removal of
the trees is done annually in an attempt to halt the spread of the dreaded
enemy to our beautiful elm trees which have adorned Truro streets for more than
100 years.
The Town of Truro, in conjunction with its Tree
Committee, has done a marvelous job of saving our magnificent elm trees from
the dreaded Dutch Elm disease. However, occasionally one succumbs and must be
removed. In the past the result was firewood, at best. But with the new Tree
Sculptures project, the result is an opportunity to showcase some of Truro's
illustrious heritage. To date over 30 sculptures have been completed and they
make an excellent contribution as a tourist attraction and bring a unique level
of awareness to our area.

Hiram
Hyde was widely regarded as one of the most enterprising Nova Scotians of the
19th century. He established a mail and passenger stagecoach service between Halifax
and Pictou via Truro, the Hub of Nova Scotia (near this location). He
introduced the first Concord Coach to Nova Scotia, which made long distance
travel "more comfortable". |

This
work depicts two bald eagles perched in the upper branches of a tree. The
eagle or 'KITPU', in the Mi'Kmaw language, is spiritually significant for
many First Nations people. The Eagle Staff' which is sculpted into the stem
of this elm also plays a traditional role in Mi'Kmaw ceremony |

Chief Julien was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He served as Chief of the Millbrook First Nation for 38 years. Mr. Julien traveled around the province delivering presentations on native culture. Chief Julien was the father of Rachael (Julien) Marshall, first woman chief in Nova Scotia |
