The Halifax Public Gardens

A map with directions on how to get to The Halifax Public Gardens

The main entrance of the Halifax Public Gardens is on the corner of South Park Street and Spring Garden Road, Halifax

The Halifax Public Gardens is the finest original formal Victorian Public Garden in North America.

To find the Halifax Public Gardens just take a pleasant 15 minute walk along Spring Garden Road from the waterfront area.

Portions of the Halifax Public Gardens were laid out by the city’s horticultural society in 1837 and it has been open to the public since 1875. The Halifax Public Gardens is one of the rare Victorian gardens in Canada and was designated a National Historic Site on April 2, 1984.The Halifax Public Gardens serve as an escape for urban dwellers and they can enjoy historic fountains, statuary, the duck pond and Sunday afternoon band concerts every Sunday all summer long in a setting of colourful flower beds and magnificent specimen trees.

The Halifax Public Gardens is open to the public from May until November, dawn until dusk and there is no admission charged.

On the last week of September in 2003 Hurricane Juan hit Nova Scotia and caused immense damage. The Halifax Public Gardens was not spared, it received a destructive blow.

Halifax rallied for an appeal for funds to restore the Halifax Public Gardens and within days the public had contributed over a million dollars to help restore the Halifax Public Gardens. It was re-opened to the public on Canada Day 2004 and my wife and I along other residents of the Halifax area and tourists from outside the local area filled the gardens to capacity. The Halifax Public Gardens is more beautiful than ever and the walking paths have been widened to the width they were back in the 1800’s. The wider paths in the Halifax Public Gardens make it easier to navigate among the many people walking these paths, especially if hoop dresses ever come back into style.

The Bandstand in the Halifax Public Gardens was erected in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee

The Halifax Public Gardens is open year round except winter and there are free open-air concerts at the Bandstand on Sunday

One of the many statues in the Halifax Public Gardens is in the likeness of Richard Power an experienced gardener from Lismore Castle, Ireland.

He was the main architect of the gardens and was the superintendent of the Halifax Public Gardens for 45 years

Giffins Pond – Halifax Public Gardens

This is the largest body of water in the Halifax Public Gardens and it was named after a young Irishman convicted of murder and hanged on the east side of the pond in the 1830’s
