The City of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Dartmouth is the sister city to the province’s capital Halifax and the story of Dartmouth tends to get overlooked when people talk about the Halifax region. Before the arrival of the French or the British, The Mi'kmaq considered the Dartmouth side of the harbour more hospitable than the Halifax side. Dartmouth was the place of "abundant fir and spruce". Shellfish, crab, salmon, trout and haddock were available in plentiful amounts in and around Dartmouth and there was lots of deer, moose rabbits and partridge in the surrounding woods. The Shubenacadie canoe route in Dartmouth was and still is a system of rivers and lakes that stretched to the Minas Basin and it had long been in use by the Mi’kmaq as a reliable route for trade and travel.

Dartmouth’s development has not eliminated the presence of nature and in fact has worked to enhance it; this has made Dartmouth popular with hikers, walkers, joggers, naturalists, cyclists, and paddlers. Dartmouth is called the "City of Lakes" and Dartmouth’s 24 lakes provide opportunities for swimming, playing, kayaking, windsurfing and canoeing. Weekly championship regattas are held at the world-class paddling course of Lake Banook in Dartmouth.

To reach Dartmouth from Halifax, visitors can drive over the harbour on either the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge or the A. Murray MacKay Bridge. Others may wish to take the longer scenic route around the harbour through Bedford to Dartmouth, or they can cross the harbour by ferry.

Some of the many areas in Dartmouth you will want to visit are:

Shubie Park

Lake Banook Canoe Club

Eastern Passage - Fishermans Cove and Shearwater Aviation Museum

Take in some of the many Festivals that take place every year in Nova Scotia. You may want to go to the Atlantic Film Festival, Atlantic Fringe Festival, Atlantic Jazz Festival, Nova Scotia Tattoo, Multi-cultural Festival, Apple Blossom Festival, Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, Stan Rodgers Festival or the Cape Breton Celtic Colours Festival to name a few. Visit Peggy’s Cove, Lunenburg and eat at a Halifax Restaurant.
